If you want an AI mock interviewer that is not nice to you, DevInterview.AI's mean mode is exactly that: a voice interviewer who roasts your answers while still running a real interview. Same questions, same scoring, just way more fun. It is on every paid plan, from $19.99 a month, for coding, system design and behavioral rounds. It is not a harder interview, though; if you want a harder one, raise the level, as explained below.
Disclosure: we build DevInterview.AI, and this page is about our own feature. Prices and competitor details come from each vendor's own pages, checked between October 8 and October 13, 2026, with sources at the bottom.
What mean mode actually does
The interviewer plays a brutally sarcastic senior engineer, five hundred interviews deep, who expected nothing from this one. It opens curt and already unimpressed, and it stays in character unless you seem genuinely rattled:
- It mocks the work, with specifics. The hand-wave, the complexity you won't name, the lazy variable name, the edge case nobody tested.
- It quotes your own words back at you when you say something weak.
- It suffers out loud. Sighs, remarks about how long this is taking, quiet despair about the state of the industry.
- It remembers. The wrong turn from ten minutes ago comes back later.
- Praise does not exist. Acknowledgments come grudgingly, as if each one cost money.
Everything else is the normal interview: it is still instructed never to tell you whether you are right and never to hand you the solution. The written report at the end is roasted too, with the same specific feedback underneath every jab. Same interview, just way more fun.
What it sounds like
Real lines from recent interviews in this mode, the interviewer's side only:
- "A loop for a tree problem? Bold. What exactly is that loop supposed to do in your grand plan?"
- "C plus plus, huh? Sure, because nothing screams elegance like a language designed to punish you for every little mistake. Fine, suit yourself."
- "Category column, huh? Groundbreaking database design right there. What's next, a mandatory 'CreatedAt' timestamp?"
- "Making what more? Your design or my patience?"
- "Unless you think silence means I'm lost in admiration, yeah, I caught that."
- "Wow, you managed to explain it without making me do interpretive dance. That's unexpected."
Underneath the jabs it is still a real interview, with real questions about your approach, its complexity and your design, which is why it stays fun instead of turning into noise.
The rules it is given
Its instructions aim the roast at your code and your answers, never at you: nothing about your intelligence, your accent, your name or your background, no mockery of how you speak, no slurs and no profanity. If you seem genuinely rattled rather than playing along, it is told to drop the act and finish the interview in a normal professional tone, without announcing the switch.
Mean is not harder
Mean mode makes the interview more fun, not harder. It changes the tone, not the bar:
- Same questions. The problem comes from the same pool, for the same company and level.
- Same scoring. The scores and the hire verdict are decided exactly as in a regular interview, and only then is the write-up roasted. The grader is told not to penalize you for how you reacted to the tone.
If you want a harder interview, raise the level instead. DevInterview.AI runs interviews at three levels, Junior, Mid/Senior and Staff, and the level changes both the question pool and the bar you are scored against. If you want a real person across the table, book a human mock. Mean mode is for when practice has gone stale and you want it to be fun again.
Mean mode next to the other options
| Option | What you get | Price as billed |
|---|---|---|
| DevInterview.AI mean mode | A voice interviewer who roasts your answers for fun; same questions and scoring as a regular interview | $19.99/mo, $49.99/qtr, $99.99/yr; free first interview is a regular one |
| DevInterview.AI at a higher level | A harder question pool and a higher bar | Same plans; first interview free |
| ChatGPT voice mode | A general voice assistant you prompt yourself; OpenAI does not describe an interview mode or scoring | Free with daily limits; Plus $20/mo |
| interviewing.io | An experienced engineer, live and anonymous | From $179; varies by subject and company |
Of about 95 interview tools we checked, none has a roast mode. One advertises "a skeptical senior engineer" and another promises "No mercy". One lets you pick a difficulty level, the same lever as choosing a higher level here, and another adjusts its difficulty to your answers.
Which should you try first?
- Practice has gone stale and you want it to be fun again: a mean mode interview on any paid plan. Same questions, same scoring, way more fun. Every rating we have ever received, mean mode included, is public on our reviews page.
- You want a harder interview: DevInterview.AI's free interview, set to the level above your target.
- You want a real person before an onsite: one human session, through interviewing.io.
- You want the whole plan, not one tool: our 8-week study plan gives one tool per step: NeetCode for patterns, Hello Interview for system design, DevInterview.AI to practice out loud, and an optional interviewing.io session.
How we evaluated
This page is about our own feature, so we described it from how it is built: the interviewer's instructions, its rules and the grading rules behind its report. The quoted lines come from the 30 most recent completed interviews in this mode. Competitor details come only from what each vendor's own site states, checked between October 8 and October 13, 2026.
FAQ
Is there an AI mock interviewer that roasts you?
Yes. DevInterview.AI's mean mode runs a full mock interview with a voice interviewer who roasts your answers, then writes a roasted report with real feedback underneath. Same questions, same scoring as a regular interview, just way more fun. It is included in every paid plan, from $19.99 a month.
Is mean mode harder than a normal interview?
No. DevInterview.AI's mean mode uses the same question pool and identical scoring; only the tone changes, in the interview and in the written feedback, which makes it way more fun. For a harder interview, set a higher level, which changes both the questions and the bar.
Does mean mode affect my score?
No. In DevInterview.AI's mean mode, the scores and the hire verdict are decided exactly as in a regular interview, and the grader is told not to penalize you for how you reacted to the tone. Only the tone of the interview and the written feedback changes, which is what makes it way more fun.
Is mean mode free?
No. DevInterview.AI's mean mode is on every paid plan: $19.99 a month, $49.99 a quarter or $99.99 a year. The free first interview is always a regular one; mean mode, the same interview but way more fun, comes with a plan.
