Most system design prep fails the same way: weeks of reading, zero minutes of speaking. The interview itself is 35 to 45 minutes of talking through requirements, estimates, and tradeoffs while drawing on a shared canvas. Reading Alex Xu prepares you to recognize a good design; it does not prepare you to produce one out loud under time pressure. So this list splits in two: tools that make you practice the actual skill, and study resources that build the knowledge underneath it.

Practice out loud
1. DevInterview.AI: a real 45-minute system design interview, on demand
DevInterview.AI runs the interview itself: a live voice AI interviewer, a diagram canvas you design on, 45 minutes, with clarifying questions and pushback on your choices as you go, then a detailed design evaluation. Problems come from a curated bank. Unlimited sessions at $19.99 a month or $99.99 a year; the first interview is free, no card.
Why it is listed first: it is the only affordable way to get repeated, realistic reps of the actual spoken format. Where it falls short: an AI is not a staff engineer's intuition. If you can afford one human calibration session, take it too.
2. interviewing.io: human calibration
Anonymous SD mocks with senior, staff, and principal engineers. Reviews in 2026 report roughly $180 to $340 per session. The feedback ceiling for the category. Use it once or twice before a real onsite, after building volume elsewhere. Their free tier includes an AI interviewer worth trying.
3. Excalidraw: the free self-practice loop
Zero-cost version of the practice habit: pick a prompt, set a 40-minute timer, talk out loud alone, and diagram in Excalidraw. No feedback, but it beats silent reading. Record yourself and review the tape; you will hear the rambling immediately.

4. Hello Interview: the best guided middle ground
Between passive reading and full mocks: written courses with guided practice problems and an AI tutor. $47 a month, $79 a year, or $279 lifetime, none auto-renewing. Their live 1:1 mock program ended May 31, 2026, so pair it with a practice tool from the section above.
5. ByteByteGo: the reference library
Alex Xu's books and courses, now with ML, mobile, and generative AI design tracks. Reviews in 2026 report roughly $189 a year or $499 lifetime. The clearest diagrams in the business. It teaches recognition, not production; do not let it be your only prep.
6. DesignGurus: the original Grokking
Grokking the System Design Interview and its siblings. $373 a year for everything (with 5 AI coding mocks included), or the System Design Roadmap alone at $381 lifetime. Solid pattern-based curriculum; same caveat as every course: reading is not rehearsal.
7. Educative: broadest catalog
Grokking Modern System Design plus 500+ other courses and AI mock interviews, reported around $59 a month or $199 a year. Good if you want one subscription covering SD, coding, and ML; less focused than the specialists.
The prep sequence that works
- Two weeks of study (ByteByteGo, Hello Interview, or Grokking): fundamentals, estimation, the standard building blocks.
- Then practice out loud, repeatedly. A design a day on DevInterview.AI or self-timed on Excalidraw. This is where the actual interview skill forms.
- One human mock (interviewing.io) the week before, if budget allows.
